So… you can trash the delicate vegetation of Spitsbergen, like lichen which grows very slowly (sometimes not more than 0.1 mm per year), with your Arctic boots, but you shall not step on a piece of wood, because this just might be dated from before 1946…

So there I was… dropped off at a 2 square meter hide, with two sleeping bags (-30C each), a thermos, some cookies, sandwiches, a can of beer, my camera equipment and a bucket.

The Svalbard Environmental Act establishes that all traces of human activity from before 1946 are protected. This applies both to permanent cultural monuments such as sites, graves, erected buildings and facilities of any kind, and loose objects. Just spent the holidays in Iceland. After spending about 3 months in Africa in the last year, I kind of got an urge to visit some place completely different before the year ended, Iceland happened to be on my destination-list for a long time. So Iceland it was!
